I have heard it said that when you sing at church, you pray twice. It's a beautiful thought! If you are interested in putting that concept into practice, you might want to consider joining one of our choirs at Sacred Heart Church. Currently, we offer: Chancel Choir (mixed adults), a Children's Choir (grades 3-8), Heartbeats Praise Band (a mixerd adult choir), Teen Choir (contemporary music with high school students), KC Choir (membership in Knights of Columbus is not requried), and Voices from the Heart (a newly established women's choir). This is a great way to play a vital role in our liturgy! CLICK HERE to learn more about our choirs.
The new officers for the Sacred Heart Church Knights of Columbus were installed on Monday, July 21. Our Knights are a very active group of devoted Catholic men. Throughout the year, the Knights host a variety of events designed to raise money used to support various groups at Sacred Heart Church and in our surrounding community. On the weekend of August 22-23, the Knights will distribute Tootsie Rolls at 5 locations in our area. If you are interested in learning more, visit their web page at www.sacredheartwdmkofc.org or contact Bill Wieland at 515-321-7980.
On June 22, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), the Hispanic Knights of Columbus celebrated the feast day for Sacred Heart Catholic Church by hosting a dinner following the 1 pm Spanish Mass in the parish center. In addition, the Des Moines area Mariachi band played during Mass. Over 200 adults and children participated in the Mass, enjoyed a fabulous meal, and had a great time.
Everybody needs a little spring (summer?) update. Earlier this summer, the Knights of Columbus organized a group of volunteers who gathered at our priest's house where Father Fabian currently resides to work on electrical issues, dry walling, window cleaning, trash hauling...you get the idea. As you can see from the picture, it was not just hard work but loads of fun! Anything is more fun with friends AND Father Fabian greatly appreciated the help.
Volunteer workers are busy at the Habitat Catholic Circle of Faith house currently being built by a group of Catholic Churches in the Des Moines area. It's great to watch the progress and the promise of a new home! If you are interested in getting involved, CLICK HERE!
The weather is beautiful at Sacred Heart Church and so are the flowers! Do you ever wonder why we have such fabulous gardens at Sacred Heart? The answer is Dee Fowler. It all started years ago when Dee and her good friend were sitting on a rock drinking coffee in her back yard when they decided they needed something to look at. The flowers began to appear in her own yard, but Dee couldn't stop there! As you attend Mass next time, take some time to admire the flowers, especially along the west driveway. Sacred Heart has been the happy and beautiful recipient of Dee's efforts for many years, but we recently learned that Dee will be retiring from her volunteer gardening position at Sacred Heart. Many many thanks to Dee for making us pretty on the outside! If you love gardening and would like to lend a hand, contact Brian at Sacred Heart, 515-225-6414.
The Knights of Columbus have celebrated the last Pancake Breakfast until next fall amid syrup and smiles! At each breakfast, the Knights designate an organization at Sacred Heart, in our Diocese, or within our community to benefit from the proceeds from each pancake breakfast. The proceeds from this breakfast will be used to help our seminarians. AND, pancakes are a great addition to any Sunday morning! Watch this web site for future events!
The month of May is traditionally dedicated to Mary. May is considered the season of new life. On Friday, May 9, the students at Sacred Heart School celebrated May Crowning, a ceremony that shows our devotion to Mary and helps us remember her love for us.
